Mane in World Cup Injury Scare as Bayern Thump Bremen

An injury to Sadio Mane sent Bayern Munich four points clear at the top of the Bundesliga as they beat Werder Bremen 6-1.

Mane needed treatment after going down for 15 minutes with a knee injury, and was replaced by Leroy Sane.

It comes just 13 days before Mane’s Senegal will play their first match at the 2022 World Cup against the Netherlands in Qatar.

Bayern, meanwhile, cruised to victory with a hat-trick from Serge Gnabry.

Former Liverpool man Mane went straight down the tunnel for further treatment after being substituted.

Two-time African Footballer of the Year, Mane is key for African champions Senegal, who face the Dutch in their Group A opener on November 21 before taking on hosts Qatar, then Ecuador.

Mane’s penalty in a shootout win over Egypt helped Senegal win their first Africa Cup of Nations title earlier this year.

It capped a dominant win for reigning champions Bayern, which ensured they would finish this midweek round of matches at the top of the Bundesliga.

Jamal Musilla put Bayern ahead on five minutes, but they were pegged back shortly after when Bremen put together a clever passing move before freeing Anthony Jung on the left to slot past Manuel Neuer.

Bayern turned on the afterburners after scoring three in eight minutes, Leon Goretzka combined with two from Ganebra to put Bayern 4-1 up on the half-hour mark.

It could have been worse for the visitors if goalkeeper Jerry Pavlinka hadn’t saved Eric Maxim Choupo Moting’s penalty.

Bayern eased into the closing stages, with Gnabry scoring a third on 82 minutes and French youngster Mathis Thiel adding sparkle to the scoreline.

Second-placed Freiburg could drop back to one point above Bayern to face RB Leipzig on Wednesday.
