ISLAMABAD: Senator Irfan Siddiqui, a close confidant and adviser of former Prime Minister Mian Nawaz Sharif, while giving some revealing statements on two private TV channels, revealed that Nawaz Sharif is not in favor of a no-confidence motion against Imran Khan, to be on a large scale. “Instead, Nawaz Sharif believed that if allowed to continue, Imran Khan’s government would eventually self-destruct under the weight of its anti-people policies,” he revealed in an interview to two private channels.

“It was also decided that Shehbaz Sharif would resign in May, but Imran Khan’s bullying tactics forced the PDM to revise its plans,” he said. Moreover, Senator Siddiqui clarified that 90% of the revelations attributed to General (retd) Qamar Javed Bajwa by journalist Shahid Maitla are true, but the claim that he had written the farewell speech of Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif.

The senator also reiterated that General (retd) Qamar Javed Bajwa wanted an extension beyond November 2022 and some senior PMLN leaders had also advised Nawaz Sharif to consider the request. He said that, however, Nawaz Sharif remained firm on his belief that there is no question of a one-day extension.

Irfan Siddiqui revealed that even in 2019, Nawaz Sharif was strongly against extending the tenure of General Bajwa and related legislation. He said that immense pressure from some members of the Muslim League-Nawaz persuaded him to accept the decision as a temporary measure, but Sharif still considers the extension a wrong decision.

Senator Siddiqui shared that Maryam Nawaz, like her father Mian Nawaz Sharif, was opposed to PDM retaining the government after the no-confidence motion was successful. In fact, he said that on several occasions, Mary expressed her displeasure at the situation, saying “why should we carry this basket of filth on our heads”.

Mian Nawaz Sharif clarified his position that Shahbaz Sharif should resign by May 25 and everything has been settled. He said that the message was also indirectly conveyed to Imran Khan that the government will resign and elections to the four provincial assemblies and the National Assembly will be held by September 2022.

He said that Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif also informed General Bajwa about the decision and the army itself conveyed the message to Imran Khan. He said that despite being advised by the army that there was no justification for his May 25 long march on Islamabad, Imran Khan announced the long march at a press conference in Peshawar on May 22.

Senator Siddiqui said that Imran Khan’s aim is to take credit for the new elections by marching on Islamabad and tell the people that he took the date of the new elections by sending the government home. However, he said, when Nawaz Sharif came to know about the plan, he said that there should be no talk of resignation and fresh elections, saying that he would never bully Imran Khan.

“Instead, he challenged Imran Khan to test his strength. Since then, the situation has taken a turn,” he said. Senator Irfan Siddiqui said that Imran Khan was offered elections on a plate, an opportunity he squandered due to his obstinacy and thuggery. He said that Imran Khan wants election now, he will have to wait more. Senator Siddiqui said that Imran Khan does not want election in real sense but want chaos and anarchy which shows his lack of wisdom and They have to be brought to their current position.
