A stabbing at a supermarket near Milan, Italy, has left one person dead and at least five others injured, some critically, police said.
A 30-year-old supermarket cashier died after a man started attacking people in Asago, local media reported.
Among the injured is Pablo Mari, a footballer on loan from Arsenal.
A 46-year-old suspect has been taken into custody. Police have ruled out any terror motive.
Reports say the attacker had mental health issues and grabbed the weapon from a supermarket shelf.
The man began stabbing people at a local shopping center in Carrefour at around 18:30 local time (16:30 GMT).
Screams were reportedly heard inside the centre, as terrified visitors tried to flee in panic.
It is said that the attacker was detained by several customers and handed over to the police who arrived at the scene.
Mari, a 29-year-old Spanish defender, suffered a stab wound to the back – but his injuries are not life-threatening. His agent Arturo Canales told that the star was conscious and had no vital organs affected.
Monza CEO Adriano Galliani told Sky Italia that Mari was shopping with his wife and young son when the attack happened.
“His son was in the trolley and his wife with him. He didn’t see anything. He then felt something painful in his back, which was the knife of the offender,” Mr Gilliani said. said
“Unfortunately, she also saw the perpetrator stab someone in the throat. She saw everything that happened and it was very disturbing,” Galliani added.
While the executive said the defender “suffered a pretty deep wound to his back”, he said his life was not in danger and he “should make a speedy recovery”.
Mari joined Arsenal from Brazilian side Flamengo in January 2020. He has played just 19 times for the Gunners and is currently on loan with top-flight Italian club Monza.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said: “I just found out. I know that Edo [Arsenal technical director] is in contact with his relatives. He is in hospital but he seems to be fine.”
