The General Council of the Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) on Thursday removed Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain from the post of party chief, after apparent differences emerged in the party ranks.
This decision was taken in a consultative meeting of the party held at the Pakistan Muslim League House on Davies Road in Lahore.
Shujaat’s brother Chaudhry Wajahat Hussain has been entrusted with the command of QL.
In the meeting, Shujaat’s close associate Tariq Bashir Cheema was removed and Kamil Ali Agha was elected as the party’s central secretary general.
Muslim League-Q has suspended the primary membership of Parvez Elahi. On 16 January, the then president of the Muslim League (Q) Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain suspended the primary membership of Chaudhry Pervez Elahi over his statement about the possible merger of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).
A day earlier, Elahi had hinted at the possibility of a merger between the Muslim League (Q) and its ally PTI.
The show-cause notice sent to Elahi said that the PML-Q president called an emergency meeting of senior leaders, where it was noted that provincial president Elahi did not have the authority to merge the party into the PTI.
“Your [divine] party membership is suspended until further notice,” read the notice. A copy of which has also been sent to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).
The statement added that the Muslim League (Q) as a political party maintains its individual identity, vote bank, party discipline and rules and regulations which Elahi violated through his statements.
“In this regard, you [Elhi] are hereby given seven days’ notice to seek an explanation within those days – either as an individual or as counsel – for such illegal and unconstitutional action.”
“Otherwise, action will be taken against you under Article 16 and Article 50 of the party constitution,” the notice added.
The decision to issue a show-cause notice to Elahi was taken at a high-level meeting of the party with then Secretary General Tariq Bashir Cheema, Senior Vice President Chaudhry Salik Hussain and senior leader Chaudhry Shafi Hussain.
