Citing political interference, the Supreme Court (SC) on Thursday barred the transfer of police personnel in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) before the expiry of their tenure.

The Supreme Court also ordered the authorities of both the provinces to implement the Police Order 2002.

A three-member bench headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Justice Umar Atta Bandial comprising Justice Ayesha Malik and Justice Athar Minullah heard the case related to political interference in transfers and postings of police personnel in Punjab.

The bench said that police personnel should not be transferred or posted at the whim of legislators.

The Supreme Court also sought the list of police personnel transferred in all provinces in the last 10 years.

The bench remarked that there is a perception that the police is being used as a political tool.

It further said that the First Information Report (FIR) of the Wazirabad attack on Imran Khan was also not filed for the same reason.

The Supreme Court said it had to intervene and order the registration of an FIR.

The Chief Justice remarked that if the Punjab government had followed the law, there would have been no need for a court order.

The hearing of the case was adjourned till the second week of January.
