ISLAMABAD: A three-judge bench of the Supreme Court on Friday expressed “dismay” over the non-implementation of its order on the delay in the Punjab elections and directed the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) to report to the Election Commission. The bench heard the case in chambers today and issued instructions to the authorities concerned.
According to the summons, State Bank Deputy Governor Seema Kamil, Special Secretary Finance, Additional Secretary Finance, Secretary ECP and AGP Mansoor Usman Awan appeared before the bench.
According to the sources, during the hearing, the judges expressed their anger over the non-implementation of the court orders and told the government that the orders will have to be implemented.
Officials related to the hearing said that Attorney General for Pakistan Mansoor Usman Awan was asked tough questions regarding the government’s stand during the hearing.
“The federal government has implemented the April 4 order of the Supreme Court,” the AGP told the bench. He further said that the government also presented the bill for the release of funds from the federal consolidated funds in the National Assembly.
“The government cannot ask the State Bank to release funds after the bill is rejected by Parliament,” AGP Awan said, according to sources.
The Supreme Court bench headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Umar Atta Bandyal ordered the Election Commission to hold elections in Punjab on May 14 and the federal government to provide Rs 21 billion funds to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP). was instructed to do. ) by April 10.
However, the ECP submitted a report in the Supreme Court on Tuesday stating that the federal government had not provided funds for the elections.
