An emergency meeting of the federal cabinet has been convened today for the second time in less than 24 hours.
The meeting, which is scheduled at Parliament House at 1 pm today, is in the context of the upcoming pronouncement of the Supreme Court’s high-stakes verdict in the election delay case.
The official agenda of the meeting presided over by Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif has not been revealed yet. However, the sources say that the overall political situation of the country will be discussed.
This will be the second consecutive meeting after the previous meeting held on Monday at 8 pm. During the meeting, the federal cabinet decided to withdraw the services of Supreme Court registrar Ishrat Ali following a letter from Justice Qazi Faiz Isa demanding her removal from the cabinet.
The meeting focused on the two-point agenda in which a detailed briefing was taken from Law Minister Senator Azam Nazir Tarar and Attorney General Mansoor Usman Awan.
There was a discussion on the circular being issued by the registrar against the order of the Supreme Court. The Registrar was asked to report the Establishment Division.
The cabinet also urged President Dr. Arif Alvi to immediately sign the Supreme Court Practice and Procedure Act 2023, which aims to resolve the constitutional and political crisis currently facing the country.
