ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court has been approached to initiate contempt of court proceedings against Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikandar Sultan Raja and others for violating the order to hold elections in Punjab.
Advocate GM Chaudhary filed an application in the Supreme Court under Article 204 of the Constitution along with Sections 3 and 4 of the Contempt of Court Ordinance 2003, seeking to initiate contempt of court proceedings and against the Supreme Court’s March judgment against the respondents. The petitioner impleaded the Prime Minister, Chief Election Commissioner, ECP members, Caretaker Chief Minister Punjab and Chief Secretary.
He said that the respondents have violated the order of the Supreme Court dated March 1, 2023 which amounts to contempt of court under Article 204 of the Constitution.
He further submitted that the respondent CEC along with other four members of the ECP issued an order dated 22nd March 2023 citing various reasons and circumstances clearly explaining that all the respondents have failed in their constitutional obligations. , have failed miserably in the discharge of duties and responsibilities. The petitioner has caused direct contempt to the petitioners for not complying with the said order of the Supreme Court dated 1st March, 2023, the petitioner submitted. He requested the Supreme Court to initiate proceedings against the alleged violators by summoning them for knowingly and willfully violating the court order, which is punishable under the provisions of the Contempt of Court Ordinance 2003.
